Medical Assistant

JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant   

Responsibilities: Responsible for assisting physicians with patient care, environmental and organizational tasks. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the care center services. Conveys a positive image of Care Center.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Practice Office Manager/ Medical Assistant Supervisor   

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (This list may include but is not limited to the following assigned duties)   

May perform duties on Job Description for Nursing Staff (RN, LPN, Triage and Medical Assistant)

1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include:
  • Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room;
  • Assisting patients as needed with collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.;
  • Collecting patient history;
  • Performing screenings per provider guidelines;
  • Assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures;
  • Relaying instructions to patients/families;
  • Performing injections
2. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include:
  • Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol;
  • Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control;
  • Cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records;
  • Ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms;
  • Administering immunizations
  • Completing all assigned training in a timely manner
  • Indexing and scanning patient records
  • Monitors and records vaccine temperatures
  • Assists with vaccine excursions
3. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned which may include:
  • Respecting/promoting patient rights;
  • Responding appropriately to emergency codes;
  • Sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly;
  • As needed, help answer phones, filing and greet patients
4. Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines, and confidentiality policies.

5. Perform all other duties/tasks as requested by providers, coordinators, and management in accordance with office procedures/policies.

6. Maintain confidentiality and use discretion when handling patient’s medical records and information.

EDUCATION: High school diploma, Certification showing completion of Medical Assistant Program required.

EXPERIENCE: Experience or interest in health care preferred.

REQUIREMENTS: Maintains CPR and Medical Assistant state certification. Work between two offices. Work alternating days, evenings, and weekends.

KNOWLEDGE:
  1. Knowledge of health care field and medical specialty.
  2. Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to medical specialty.
  3. Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families.
  4. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.
SKILLS:
  1. Skill in performing tasks appropriately.
  2. Skill intact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions.
  3. Skill in understanding of patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
  4. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition.
ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  2. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  3. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  4. Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: 
  1. Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings.
  2. Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to clinic setting.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: 
  1. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
  2. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  3. Requires working under stress in emergency situations and irregular hours.
  4. Continual patient contact may involve dealing with angry and upset people.

Requirements:   Maintains CPR and Medical Assistant state certification. Work between two offices. Work alternating days, evenings, and weekends.
